Betty Rieckmann
Worthy heiress of the “Light & Space” group of the 50s in Los Angeles, Betty Rieckmann was born in 1986 in Palo Alto, California. She moved to Germany at age 11 and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe in 2011. In 2014, she obtained her Bachelor in Lighting Design at HAWK Hildesheim, Germany and won the audience award at MMA at Hünfeld that same year.
Thanks to the new medium of LEDs, the artist transcends and transforms the philosophy of Light Art. Where others have not hesitated to crudely expose the other side of the coin, Betty flips it over to better "dress" this technology with subtlety and elegance. Its variations of colors, their interactions and the predilection of the square are a beautiful tribute to Josef Albers and Frank Stella while the nebulous light echoes in a certain James Turrell and combines painting and space. Light Art is then at its best.
We then find all the poetry and nobility of neon being reborn in a more modern technology so magical and evocative of another time.
